Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group:In 2006, Carlyn Berghoff, a fourth-generation family member of one of Chicago’s most famous restaurant families, needed space for her rapidly expanding catering business. That year her 70-year-old parents, Herman and Jan Berghoff, retired and closed the historic Berghoff restaurant on West Adams Street in Chicago. So when they closed, Carlyn moved her catering business into the 45,000-square-foot building. “And, although catering and restaurants are very different, I had been successful at catering for 22 years, so I thought I might as well try my hand at running restaurants as well,” she said. She subsequently opened Berghoff cocktail bar and dining room, serving lunch and dinner. The menu offers a wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrées and includes updated Berghoff classics, which Carlyn calls “tradition with a twist. She also opened the Berghoff Café, a popular lunch-only cafeteria nestled in the lower level of the Berghoff building. The menu offers hand-carved sandwiches, made-to-order salads and paninis, daily specials, Berghoff beer and root beer and other hot and cold beverages and desserts.

The Fifty/50: Restaurant veterans Greg Mohr and Scott Weiner have created The Fifty/50, an upscale, hip dining and bar experience in Chicago’s booming Wicker Park neighborhood. The Fifty/50 uses fresh, made-from-scratch ingredients, presenting a menu featuring the best smoked, grilled and fried foods, as well as top quality “secret recipes.” All sauces, including the in-house aged Louisiana hot sauce, are made from Mohr’s and Weiner’s own recipes, giving each dish a traditional, down-home taste.
